Object description
This finely cut shadow puppet figure made of cowhide depicts the head of a male role (Shēng) wearing a wind hood (a headdress with side flaps or cloth that protects the head and often the neck from wind and weather, similar to a hood), a furrowed brow, and a beard. Some details of the headdress are painted black, green, and red, as are the eyes and mouth. Dark wax remnants remain on the chin beard, where real hair was once attached. The expressive design of the facial features enhances the characterization of the figure. The piece comes from the tradition of Eastern Shaanxi shadow play and was created during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911).
