Object description
A shadow puppet of the character Karagöz disguised as a woman. Karagöz is easily recognised by his round face, round und black beard as well as a bald head. Various stories are told with the character Karagöz. This figure was probably used for the play "Sahte Gelin" (tr: "The False Bride"): Here, Karagöz disguises himself as a bride in order to persuade Matiz, the drunkard, to swear off alcohol. Karagöz wears women's clothing, usually carrying a veil or fan. Only after the wedding is he unmasked and Matiz learns his lesson. (07.05.2025, EF)
