Object description
The rod puppet shows the main character of the Brussels theatre, Woltje. He typically wears a cap and a suit in a black and white chequered pattern. The figure has conical legs that taper towards the bottom. The legs are made of red felt. The character represents a typical Brussels rascal. The marionette is played with two rods on the head and the right hand. (09/05/2025, MP)
Object history
A certificate on the marionette indicates the origin of the marionette from the Théâtre Toone in Brussels, Belgium. In 1988, five figures from the Théâtre Toone came into the Fritz Fey Collection - today the KOLK 17 Collection - via the antique dealer M. Michel-André Robert from Brussels. Among them was this figure of Woltje. (04.04.2025 MP)
