Object description
Bunraku 文楽, also known as Ningyō Jōruri 人形浄瑠璃, is a traditional form of Japanese puppet theater. One puppet is usually moved by three puppeteers. One person plays the head and right arm, another the left arm and the third the legs. The puppeteers can be seen on stage with the puppets. This head has a built-in mechanism that can be used to turn the eyes and stick out the tongue. The head is painted and has a black human hair wig. (08.04.2025, EF)
Object history
This head of a Bunraku puppet was purchased by Fritz Fey Jr. in Copenhagen in March 1993 for 500 DM. Further details and the journey of the piece from Japan to Copenhagen are not known to KOLK 17 at this time. (08.04.2025, EF)
