Animal
Object description
Perhaps this animal figure head (sogo kun) is the head of a zoomorphic ‘costume puppet’ or the head for a movable animal figure stage (kalaka kònò sogo) from the sogo bò theatre. However, the latter is more likely.
Records by K.-H. Krieg refer to the animal depicted as a konkoro (bam.: large antelope).
The head of the antelope is elongated and appears delicate due to its form and elongated shape. The paintwork on the front of the antelope's head is colourful and features various patterns and shapes, some of which are intricate. (21.10.2024, EF)
Object history
The figure was acquired by Karl-Heinz Krieg on one of his field research trips. Krieg sold it to Fritz Fey Jr. in January 1992 as part of a convolute. Krieg's notes state that the figure was carved by Adama Konate in the village of Sirabougou around 1984 and finally sold to K.-H. K. by Teno Abdul in 1991. In addition, there are notes on the name and character of the puppet from a conversation between K.-H. K. and (presumably) Teno Abdul.
