Object description
The puppet is designed in the style of traditional Chinese opera. In its basic form, it represents a Wusheng 武生, a young military character. With a mask and theatrical beard, it also embodies a Jing 淨, male roles with elaborately painted faces and thick beards. The figure wears a red, stylized military outfit with four back banners. The soles of the shoes are, typical of Chinese opera, thickened in a platform style. The control has a specific Chinese shape, where all the strings converge at a single board. (14.05.2025, LS)

Object history
The flags on the puppet's back are inscribed with the characters 帅 and 将. These are simplified Chinese characters. It is therefore possible to date the puppet after the writing reform of the Communist People's Republic of China in 1964. Further details or how the puppet became part of the KOLK 17 collection are not known. If you know anything about the origin or staging context of the object or have any comments, we look forward to receiving your feedback via our contact form with the subject ‘Comments and questions about the collection’ (14.05.2025, LS)
