Object description
The metal sheet, painted on both sides, shows a man with a black tailcoat and hat. The tailcoat, the hat and the man's arms and legs are connected to a mechanism with threads. This consists of cogwheels and metal plates and is attached to a wooden frame. This mechanism can be used to move these parts of the figure. It can therefore appear as if the figure is pulling off his hat or taking a walk and the tailcoat is swaying. Such flat figures were animated in the Theatrum Mundi with different mechanisms by puppeteers. (25.05.2025, MP)
Object history
Dr. Helga Werle-Burger attributes this figure to the Apel family of puppeteers. KOLK 17 knows nothing else about the history of the collection of this object. If you know anything about the origins or production context of the object or have any comments, we would be delighted to hear from you via our contact form using the subject line “Comments and questions about the collection”.
