Detlef Heinichen is a German puppeteer. He studied puppetry from 1975-1978 at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. He then played for the puppet theatre of the Zwickau City Theatre. After being banned from his profession for a year due to statements critical of the regime, he worked at the Staatliches Puppentheater Dresden and the puppet theatre of the Deutsch-Sorbisches Theater Bautzen until he left the GDR in 1986 and founded the puppet theatre Theatrium in Bremen. Heinichen returned to Dresden in 2011. (17.04.2025, MP)

Object description
This puppet is a string puppet representing the German cabaret artist, comedian and film producer Karl Valentin (1882-1948). The design is modelled on the real person, with the mouth and chin area movable. The marionette was made by puppeteer and designer Michael Hepe "Benecke". The puppet was performed in the marionette variety show "Varieté van Holz" by Detlef Heinichen in Bremen's Theatrium. (06.05.2025, MP)
