Xaver Schichtl was born in Glauchau in 1888 as the sixth child to the Franz August Schichtl family. At the age of 13, he was trained by travelling stage -painter Konrad Ochs. When his brother Karl took over their father's business in 1908, he travelled with him as a stage manager. His father Franz August left him his second theatre in 1912. Xaver Schichtl was recruited at the beginning of the war in 1914. During his time in the army, he played with self-made hand puppets to entertain the soldiers. From 1915, he continued his puppet theatre with hand puppets made by his uncle Johann in Cologne. (18.06.2025, EF)<br class="linefeed" />

The Schichtl's repertoire included many performances with trick puppets. Xaver Schichtl was also influenced by current events and was inspired by Walt Disney. This included the "Mickey Mouse Ballet" with two dancing Mickey Mice. (25.05.2025, MP)
Object history
The Schichtl family's estate came to the TheaterFigurenMuseum in Lübeck in 1990. It consists of 262 marionettes, 53 marionette heads, stages, props, roll decorations, text books, sheet music, advertising material, posters and account books. Xaver's daughter, Dorle Schichtl, handed over the estate as part of a presentation in the Great Exchange Hall of Lübeck Town Hall. It also included this Mickey Mouse. (25.05.2025, MP)
