1912 - 1986
Fritz Fey Sr. only started puppeteering in 1945 and travelled with a mobile hand puppet theatre. In 1947, his wife Ingeborg Fey joined him and the two of them were now able to work in a more complex way. Marionettes soon replaced the hand puppets. Fritz Fey Sr. wrote the plays himself or adapted existing ones. Initially, he also carved them himself and later sculpted his puppets. In 1968, he opened the first puppet theatre museum in Schmilau, in the format of a “retirement home for puppets”. In 1977, Fey Sr. opened the Lübecker Marionettentheater at Kolk No. 20/22. Fairy tale
Object description
The figure is a fairy from the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty”, which was staged for marionettes by Fritz Fey senior. In the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, a party is held to celebrate the birth of Sleeping Beauty. Fairies are also invited to this party. However, the king only invited 12 of the 13 fairies as there were not enough dishes. The 13th fairy, who was not invited, nevertheless appeared at the party and cursed Sleeping Beauty. The marionettes show a simple form of figure creation. A puppet can only be created by using cloth and thread. (22.11.2024 MP)
Object history
The marionettes from the play 'Dornröschen/Sleeping Beauty' were made by Fritz Fey senior at the Lübeck Marionette Theater and came to the KOLK 17 Collection in August 2016 via the Fey estate (22.11.2024 MP).
